Why do People meditate?

People have used meditation to help treat a number of problems, including: Anxiety, stress, depression, pain, and addictive behaviors, such as using drugs, nicotine, and alcohol.

Meditation may help with these problems, but it doesn’t take the place of treatment you receive from a doctor. One of the great things about meditation is that you can do it on your own whenever you want, and it may help you relax and feel better. Also, you don’t need any special tools or equipment to practice meditation.

Learning how to be aware of the present moment in meditation may keep your mind sharp and help you focus better in other areas of life as well. For example, you may be able to react faster to road conditions when you drive if you focus solely on driving, rather than being distracted by talking, thinking about other things, or listening to the radio.

How to Care for Sprains and Strains

For immediate relief, soak in bucket or shallow pan of cold water with ice cubes in it for around 15 minutes or for as long as is comfortable. Do this several times. Keep your feet elevated. Wrapping lightly with an ace bandage has been known to help.

If it isn’t too tender, press points all around the ankle bone for 3 seconds each. Gently stroke the area away from the swelling. You can do this for yourself, but it works better to have a friend do it. Have someone gently stretch your leg while you are lying down; being careful not to grasp the swollen or painful area. Run your shower water (5 min. hot as you can stand and 5 min. cold alternately) over the sprain. These seem to increase circulation and to decrease swelling.

An inflatable cast, called the Air Stirrup might work for you. Ask your doctor. If you think the damage is more than a simple sprain, consult with a professional first.

Yoga Therapy for Asthma

Tests supported out at Yoga Therapy Centers, across the world, have shown remarkable results in curing asthma. In some cases it has also been found that attacks can actually be averted, without the aid of drugs, just through yogic practices. There is ample research evidence to substantiate the fact that Yoga Therapy makes the treatment so much more successful. Nowadays, even allopathic and homeopathic doctors have arrived at the consensus that Yoga is an excellent alternative therapy for Asthma.

Since Yoga believes that the mind is central to a diseased condition, pacifying and placating it would, in itself, help cure the disease to a great extent. The practice of yogasanas, yogic kriyas, pranayamas, relaxation and meditation calm down the whole system. This, in turn, facilitates proper assimilation of food and strengthens the lungs, digestive and circulatory system. Over a period of time, that checks attacks and even cures the condition.

This is because Yogic practices result in more anxiety reduction than drugs do. Yoga gives patients access to their own internal experience and helps them pin-point the cause of their ailment, i.e find their own triggers. This comes through increased self-awareness. Simple Yogic practices help regulate breathing patterns, as well as enhance lung functioning. Result is that most patients are able to manage their condition by simply allaying their fears and anxieties. [Read more...]

Relaxation strengthens the immune system and promotes self-healing forces. Noise, a hectic lifestyle, and a constant, incessant flood of irritations are grounds enough to make some people ill. Indulging in Buddhist Meditation can ease stress related problems and reinforce the will in the fight to regain strength.

In nerve racking situations, stress hormones such as Adrenalin are released into the system. When high quantities of these hormones are found such as in the case of highly nervous people, there is a risk of weakening the immune system which can lead to illness.

With Buddhist meditation techniques, the balance between tension and relaxation can be once again achieved. In the meditative state, all outside distractions are shut out, and only the moment and the consciousness of the inner self have any meaning.

The practice of concentrating on one’s own rhythm of breathing can be very calming. Try relaxing each and every individual part of your body, from the hair on your head, to the tips of your toes. Mentally visit each region in turn, imagining a warm flow circulating through each body part and washing away all traces of stress and strain. The self-healing forces are stimulated by concentrating on every part of the body. This also has a positive effect on the immune system because the flow of stress hormones is diminished. exercise cuts chance of colds

Regular exercise can improve your mood, help you lose weight, and add years to your life. Still need another reason to hit the gym? A new study suggests that working out regularly helps ward off colds and flu. Exercise is thought to boost the circulation of the virus-fighting white blood cells known as natural killer cells—the “Marine Corps and Army of the immune system,” says the lead author of the study, David Nieman, a professor of health, leisure, and exercise science at Appalachian State University, in Boone, N.C. “Exercise gets these cells out…to deal with the enemy.”

The increased immune activity brought on by exercise only lasts for about three hours, but the cumulative effect seems to keep disciplined exercisers healthier than most. “As the days add up, it adds up to improved protection from viruses that can make you sick. It’s also possible that people who exercise frequently tend to lead healthy lifestyles in general, and are therefore less likely than couch potatoes to get sick.
