Winter Breaks On Lanzarote
Posted on Thursday, October 15th, 2009 at 8:53 am
The Canary Islands offer the most cost effective winter sun breaks available. And are located much closer to the UK than other destinations – such as the Caribbean or Dubai. At a manageable four hours flying time.
Whilst these seven Spanish islands have something of a reputation as package holiday hotspot some, such as Lanzarote, offer plenty of peace and tranquillity and remain largely unspoiled. Especially once you venture outside of the main resorts.
During the winter months tourists can expect to enjoy temperatures in the 20´s (Celsius) and plenty of daylight hours. Even during the darkest days of December. Making a beach holiday viable here all year round.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of these islands and is best known for its beautiful beaches and barren volcanic scenery. Created by eruptions centuries ago which covered the interior of the island in lava. An area which is now aptly known as the Fire Mountains. Although fortunately all of these volcanoes are now dormant.
Tourism is concentrated in the three resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca – all of which are within a forty minute transfer from the sole international airport at Arrecife. As the island is small – just 60km by 40km in dimension.
Four star hotels are popular with tourists – as prices here start from around €65 per night. Whilst villas in Lanzarote are also in demand – especially in and around the resort of Playa Blanca which lies at the southern end of the island.
With prices starting at around €500 per week.
Puerto del Carmen is ideal for anyone planning more of a budget break. As this resort is the largest on the island and boasts more apartments in Lanzarote than any other destination. Expect to pay upwards of €180 per week for a basic one bedroom apartment on a holiday complex here.
As well as the awesome scenery of the Fire Mountains Lanzarote is home to over 100 great beaches and lots of pretty towns and villages. Such as Haria in the north of the island which nestles in the Valley of 1000 Palms. Where locals plant a palm tree for very new born baby.
Visitors also love the creations of the local artist César Manrique. Who developed unique tourist attractions such as the Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Rio by working with Lanzarote´s volcanic terrain. His former home and studio in Tahiche are especially impressive – as the whole edifice is built over five bubbles in the lava flow.
Lanzarote is definitely one of the favourite choices for escaping the cold dark winter days in the UK for a warmer climate. We get a lovely influx of winter residents here we fondly refer to as “The Swallows” who arrive from Oct to Dec and leave from Mar to May so they enjoy their time back in the UK with family during the spring and summer months but have that lovely winter climate, typically 20-25 degrees and 9 hours of sunshine, its warm enough to laze on the beaches and enjoy the sea or a heated swimming pool.
With the low cost airlines now offering some amazing winter flights, are you coming to join us?
