Espresso Lane to High Cholesterol

If you have a serious grande-cappuccino habit – and tend to have high cholesterol levels – you may want to switch brews. The oil in coffee beans (both regular and decaf) contains cafestol, a potent cholesterol booster. Paper filters absorb almost all the compound, but oil drops can pass through metal filters, so espresso, French press coffee, and brews made with permanent gold filter all contain cafestol (an average of 2 to 2.6 milligrams per ounces of coffee or 1 to 2 ounces of espresso). In studies, consuming 10 milligrams of cafestol daily for four weeks raised people’s cholesterol by a scary 8 to 10 percent. Bottom line: you don’t have to worry if you drink is a cup or two of coffee for breakfast (even if your cup is a mug). But if you routinely chugalug several big containers of non-paper-filter java, including French press style, cappuccinos, and lattes or several cups of espresso and you’ve been told to watch your cholesterol, switch to a paper drip. Or learn to love tea.

How to avoid Bloating

Basically, bloating is one of those embarrassing conditions that affect the vast majority of people and yet very few of us are willing to openly talk about it – for obvious reasons. The corollary of this “hush-hush” attitude, the fact that we rarely talk about bloating and usually just grit our teeth and do our best to hide it, is that for most of us, bloating is just another one of those things.

Here are a few easy things we can do to fight bloating:

First you should chew our food very carefully. If we’re in a hurry and gulp down our lunch, for example, we’re very likely to take in more air, which becomes trapped in the intestines – and that’s not very good news for our bowel.

Second, eat food rich in zinc, a vital mineral that helps with protein digestion. Lack of zinc makes the small intestine less able to absorb food and causes undigested food to be exposed to bacteria in the intestines for longer, creating gas and bloating. The best sources of zinc are lamb, salmon, spinach, rye bread, lentils, peas and brown rice.

Third, avoid heartburn triggers such as alcohol, caffeine, high fatty or spicy foods. Alcohol in particular inflames the digestive tract and depletes the body of magnesium, which has an essential part in keeping food moving through the bowel.

Another is contraceptives can also cause bloating, as they trigger water retention, so you may want to switch to a Pill with diuretic properties. Eat natural yogurt regularly and avoid water or any other fizzy drinks as you eat.

Finally, avoid refined starchy foods that contain high quantities of yeast and sugar, as they promote fermentation in the digestive tract – with unwanted consequences.

Eating plan for fat belly!

Mostly, a not-so-flat belly is not largely precipitated by fat deposits (or not only by fat deposits, to be completely fair). The first step towards getting a flat belly is not doing an impressive – and very painful – amount of stomach crunches, but rather going on a cleansing diet to eliminate any and all bloating. Here is such a suggested meal plan. It is conceived to expand over three days, but the “Day 1″ menu is the base, with various other suggestions for a varied eating regime that will not leave you bored out of your mind. The plan is made up of simple, unprocessed foods that will keep you healthy and help you eliminate any bloating over the next few days.

Breakfast
1/2 cup oats simmered or microwaved with nonfat milk OR
2 egg yolks and 3 whites whisked and scrambled and a glass of unsweetened freshly squeezed orange juice.

Mid-morning snack
6 oz live and active culture yogurt and plenty of water

Lunch
Herb, spinach, or tomato omelet (2 yolks and 3 whites) OR
grilled chicken with leaf salad (must include watercress) OR
4 ounces of tuna packed in spring water, served with salad, capers and olives

Mid-afternoon snack
10 ounces nonfat milk with 1/2 tablespoon honey

Dinner
Grilled, poached, or pan-fried salmon fillet with sliced tomato and cucumber salad OR
one baked potato with 1 spoon of sour cream and spinach with carrot puree (no butter) OR
2 “skinny” burgers (minced beef, nothing else) served with 1 spoon of tomato salsa and a baked potato with 1 spoon of sour cream

Two hours before bed
1 apple, 1 banana and 6 almonds, and a small cup of nonfat milk, warmed, with 1/2 tsp honey OR
1 cup of warm nonfat milk with 1/2 tsp honey and one apple OR
